Malcolm Brinded was appointed Chair of EngineeringUK in October 2016.

Bio & Background

He was a main Board Director of Royal Dutch Shell plc for a decade until retirement in 2012. His last role was as Executive Director for Upstream International, having previously been Executive Director for global Exploration and Production from 2004, a Managing Director of Royal Dutch from 2002, and Shell UK Chair from 1999. Prior to that he worked in the UK, Netherlands, Oman and Brunei.

Malcolm graduated in Engineering from Cambridge University. He is a Fellow of the UK institutions of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, the Energy Institute, and the Royal Academy of Engineering and has Honorary Doctorates from Aberdeen and Robert Gordon Universities. In 2001, he was awarded the CBE for services to the UK oil and gas industry, and in 2011, HM the Sultan of Brunei appointed him Dato Seri Leila Jasa.

He is currently Chair of EngineeringUK, a Trustee and past-Chair of the Shell Foundation, a Trustee and past-President of the Energy Institute, and Head Judge of the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa prize.

His interests include sailing, cycling and grandfathering.
